Lori McElroy (MBE, PhD, Hon FRIAS, FIBPSA, MCIBSE) is Professor of Smart, Resilient Cities in the Department of Architecture at the University of Strathclyde.
Lori is an engineer with a background spanning the application of simulation in environmental engineering, architecture and sustainable design and has been active in the energy and environment field for over 25 years both in practice and research, working in the private and public sectors. This includes delivery of three state-of-the-art academic/industry collaborative programmes for the UK and Scottish Governments over a period of 20 plus years and the dissemination of this work internationally.
Lori has focussed her career on changing the way construction professionals do business: from supporting the use of innovative and novel performance assessment techniques in practice; to providing wide ranging support and advice to industry and building clients on policy development and implementation. She has a passion for the application of integrated performance appraisal for the improvement of architecture and to create sustainable places, on the premise that better places contribute significantly to better lives. She was awarded an MBE in 2012 for services to sustainable construction.
Lori is a regular advisor to Scottish Government and is committed to delivery of a better built environment at environmental, social and economic levels, and in particular the opportunities that this can afford in respect of community empowerment through job creation and skills development. She sits on a number of Scottish Government working groups linked with the government’s commitment to the inclusive delivery of a zero carbon built environment by 2045.
Lori is the immediate past President of the International Building Performance Simulation Association, Chair and a Trustee/ Board Member of the Existing Homes Alliance and is active in a number of EU funded H2020 projects.
